Acne rosacea: symptoms, causes and treatment

Acne rosacea is a particular form of erythematous folliculitis which can affect the whole face, including the eyelids and conjunctiva. The condition, which mainly affects adults, causes erythematous follicular papules or pustules. Unlike acne vulgaris, however, comedones are not present. Acne rosacea is often confused with rosacea (couperose), with which it has no relationship or similar treatments.

Acne Rosacea and Rosacea/Couperose are separate conditions that should not be confused. Rosacea or Couperose is characterised by dilated blood vessels in the cheeks and hypersensitive skin or sensitive skin.
Acne Rosacea is characterised by folliculitis that causes redness not only in the cheeks but also in the forehead and nose.
Therefore, the two skin problems have different causes and different treatments.

What are the causes of acne rosacea?

Studies suggest that the proliferation of demodex folliculorum mites in hair follicles is responsible for acne rosacea. By looking under a microscope after squeezing follicles and sebum in the inflamed area, numerous of these elongated mites, which are usually found on our skin, were present.

Acne rosacea is acquired, but the reasons as to why it affects some and not others is currently unknown.

How to treat acne rosacea

For effective treatment of Acne Rosacea, consult your dermatologist for the most suitable treatment.

The supportive cosmetic treatment we suggest:

  • Every evening, apply an almond-sized amount of 2S Cream to the face and massage well until absorbed.
Thanks to sulfur and salicylic acid, 2S Cream works seamlessly through the night to stop mites growing.
2S Cream can be massaged into the eyelids, but take care to avoid contact with the inside of the eye.
  • In the morning you can apply Lenitive Cream, which acts as a soothing agent.

CLEANSING

Use Eudermic Washing Base, a non-foaming, lauryl-sulfate free wash, as both a make-up remover and cleanser.

MAKE-UP

To cover lesions, apply Argillina Skin Color mineral foundation and/or Sun Clay compact powder in the morning. By using these breathable products, Acne Rosacea does not worsen and the results of the treatment cream application are maximised.

To be avoided

Persons suffering from Acne Rosacea should not apply moisturising creams and should not use make-up cream cosmetics otherwise the condition will worsen. The use of sun creams is not recommended as the components present may worsen the dermatitis.
